Product Photography Tips for Small Businesses

Good product photography sells. Bad product photography costs you customers. Whether you're selling online, posting on social media, or putting together a catalogue — the quality of your product images directly affects how people perceive your brand.
1. Lighting is everything
The single biggest difference between amateur and professional product photos is lighting. Natural light from a large window works surprisingly well for smaller products. Position the product near the window, use a white reflector (even a piece of card) on the opposite side to fill in shadows, and avoid direct sunlight which creates harsh shadows.
2. Keep backgrounds clean
A plain white or light grey background keeps the focus on your product. You can buy a simple sweep of white card or fabric for very little. For e-commerce listings, clean backgrounds are essential — they look professional and make your products easy to compare.
3. Consistency matters
If you're photographing a range of products, keep everything consistent — same background, same lighting setup, same angle. This creates a cohesive look across your website or catalogue and makes your brand feel more polished and trustworthy.
4. Show multiple angles
Online shoppers can't pick up your product and turn it around. Give them the next best thing — multiple angles, close-up details, and at least one lifestyle shot showing the product in use. The more visual information you provide, the more confident they'll feel buying.
5. Know when to call in a professional
DIY product photography can get you started, but there's a ceiling to what you can achieve without professional equipment and experience. If your products are your livelihood, investing in professional photography pays for itself quickly through better conversion rates and a stronger brand image.
